Abria Joseph has been practicing yoga in the Bay Area for 17 years, where he began his practice at 16 years old as the captain of the football team in high school.
His passion for yoga and eastern philosophy ignited his travels where he studied in Thailand in 2001, and attended a 700hr vinyasa yoga certification encompassing Asana, vipasana, teaching methodology, postural alignment clinics and the study of the 8 limbs of yoga. After 5 years of practicing Bikram Yoga, Abria opened his practice to vinyasa yoga and was inspired to continue and share each of the different practices with the method and style he was trained.
He is currently based in Marin County and teaches at surrounding Bay Area studios when not traveling and teaching abroad. An inspiring opportunity that Abria pursued in 2011 was volunteering with the Prison Yoga Project. Abria taught prisoners within the San Quentin State Prison system, creating space for inmates to detach from prison life, so that they could realize each moment and what resides within. The meditative aspect of the classes he taught allowed for the mental and physical release of stress that is endured in prison. This experience has drawn attention to supporting at-risk youth and other volunteer work teaching children, and was the inspiration for a yoga program that has been implemented at his high school in California.
Over the past 17 years, Abria has lived throughout the United States, Italy, Holland, France, Mexico, Nepal, and Thailand, teaching Bikram yoga, as well as a heated vinyasa classes and Synergy (Acro Yoga), which emphasizes and was created more for the therapeutic practice which connects people through communication and playfulness. Abria has been sharing and teaching yoga to the Lululemon team and community for the past 2 years as an ambassador in Corte Madera, CA. His passion for traveling has opened more space to guest teach and host workshops, including the 10 day retreats that he holds around the world. The collection of amazing teachers at these workshops and retreats are friends, yogis and healers that are internationally traveled and enthusiasts of living life on purpose, for a purpose.
