Portico Dance Theatre arose out of an entrepreneurial spirit to provide choreographic and performance opportunities where none had previously existed. This was due in response to a surprisingly large and diverse community of willing and able performers who were hungrily searching for an artistic outlet. As the original founders, Jennifer Alden and Valeria Cordero were united in a mutual vision to see contemporary dance thrive in the city of Tulsa. A combination of their birth and national heritage (Portland, Oregon and Mexico), the name “Portico” (meaning “doorway” or “open structure”) is an apt representation for the philosophy of our company: we aim to always maintain an open door towards innovation and collaboration through the incorporation of different dance styles and artistic mediums.
Since its inception in 2008, Portico has grown and progressed exponentially in only a short period of time. From two dancers to over eight talented performers and an average of one to two shows every other month including full length productions, our rapid growth and performances on demand at numerous venues throughout the city are valid indicators of the need and desire for the growth of contemporary dance in Tulsa.
