About Head Coach Mourning-Star

Phoenix began his triathlon life as an alternative summer training for his career as a competitive freestyle skier in the mid-1990’s. Eventually, after a few summers spent Southern California’s San Diego and LA counties, he dove in head first into endurance racing competing in triathlons of all distances, rough-water ocean swims, 5k’s to ultra-distance runs.

Phoenix started teaching skiing, snowboarding and swimming in his high school years. In 1998, Phoenix began coaching triathlon, helping his friend, mentor and training partner train women surviving breast cancer with the Los Angeles TEAM Survivor and then start the Cerritos College Triathlon club.

For the last 20+ year, Phoenix has shared his passion of sport and health coaching swim teams, triathlon, group fitness and diving at high schools, YMCAs, community centers, fitness clubs and universities.
