The OutCenter is the only nonprofit organization of its kind in Berrien County, Michigan, a mostly rural area of Michigan, and one of only 6 serving the State. Its mission is to provide support to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) and allied persons and their families and to advocate for greater understanding and respect for their lives throughout Southwest Michigan.  This mission is fulfilled by utilizing a three-pronged approach:

  1. Working in strategic partnerships with the area’s human and social services network to leverage additional support to LGBT youth, adults and families, and create a larger system of allies;
  2. Providing direct support to youth and adults through facilitated group meetings, referrals to professional LGBT allied therapists and counselors, and attorneys, and free access to a cyber-center and a library rich in LGBT-interest literature and media; and
  3. Organizing the LGBT community and allies in dialogues, activities and initiatives on civic issues critical to the establishment of a safe community and in support of creating a home for LGBT rights for youth, adults and their families.
