June Smathers-Jolley and Elizabeth Smathers-Shaw are daughters of the late, legendary shaped-note singer, Quay Smathers, of Western North Carolina. The two have attended singings and taught singing schools around the United States. June directs the historic Christian Harmony singing at Morning Star UMC in Canton, NC, and Elizabeth is currently writing a book about the shaped-note traditions of the Blue Ridge Mountains. They both inherited their father's wit and passion for shaped-note singing, and infuse their work to conserve the Blue Ridge Mountain style with humor and dedication. Generously sharing their musical legacy, June and Elizabeth make sure participants in the Quay Smathers Memorial Singing School leave the experience feeling a part of the unique family of Blue Ridge Mountain shaped-note singers.
