New York Quechua Initiative

The New York Quechua Initiative was created by a committee of like-minded individuals comprised of native Quechua speakers, heritage speakers, and students from the New York area. Our mission is to preserve and diffuse Quechua languages through workshops, cultural events, and educational programming. Millions of people continue to speak this 1000-year-old indigenous language in Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Colombia – and the United States. Some say that the Quechua language was born from the musical sounds of nature, such as thunder, running water, the wind, and birdcalls. For this reason, New York Quechua uses expressive culture that engages the senses to celebrate and promote Quechua language and culture. It is our desire to support those Quechua speakers living in NYC and allow the language to be shared with the greater community and generations to come.
