New Providence Baptist Church

The New Providence Baptist Church was organized on May 12, 1950, at 8817 W. Eight Mile Road, Detroit, Michigan. The place of worship was located at 8221 E. Eight Mile Road in Detroit. In May of 1950 New Providence called Rev. Edward Solomon as its pastor.

Due to the continued growth of the congregation, within three months New Providence made preparations to begin the construction of a new church building. The members of the church made financial pledges to ensure the construction of their new worship facility. In September of 1951 the blue prints were drawn up, and a permit to build was approved. Construction work began in of August of 1952. The members continued to meet financial pledges while the construction of the building advanced.

On May 2, 1952 the New Providence Baptist Church filed for the Ecclesiastical Corporation Articles of Association with the State of Michigan.

The construction phase of the building was completed in August of 1954.

Under the pastorate of Rev. Solomon the church grew substantially from the original thirty –five members to more than 300 by 1980. Because of constant capacity, crowds, and the church’s inability to function efficiently in the allotted space, the members decided to enlarge the church’s sanctuary and fellowship hall and add new offices and classrooms.

In 1986 a new building fund was established. The membership pledged financial gifts for the new renovation of the church. During the preparatory and planning phase of the new project, Rev. Edward Solomon, the church’s pastor for more than thirty-seven years passed away on January 19, 1988. In March of that same year, Rev. Everett N. Jennings Sr., who was serving as the assistant pastor, was chosen as our new pastor.

On August 27, 1990 we broke ground for our renovation and expansion project. On May 5, 1991 we held our first worship service in our new facility. In 1991 when the building project was complete, there followed a church mortgage which had to be paid off in 15 years. With God as our guide and a willingness to follow our pastor’s leadership, our mortgage was paid off in five years, July 1, 1996.

Presently, New Providence Baptist Church has more than 3,500 members on role. These 3,000 members are representatives of over 700 families. With God on our side and with grace to keep us we will continue to grow in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Finally, on April 15, 2001 we “Moved From Vision to Victory”. Phase 1 of the sanctuary and day care (exterior facade) was completed. Presently, we are looking to “Jesus who is the author and the finisher of our faith”, to bring us into a much greater work. This work is called:

I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what He will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved. And the Lord answered me, and said, write the vision and make it plain upon the tables, that he may run that readeth it.  For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it because it will surely come, it will not tarry.
