Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit and Allee Willis
Now celebrating its 25th Anniversary this year, Mosaic is an internationally-acclaimed Creative Youth Development organization making comprehensive theatre and vocal music training accessible to all talented Detroit teens. Over the past 25 years, Mosaic’s young artists have become cultural ambassadors for Detroit. Mosaic’s all-teen performances have toured to Africa, Asia, Europe and 30 states and provinces throughout the U.S. and Canada, including performances at The White House, The Kennedy Center, The Apollo Theater and Carnegie Hall. Mosaic’s vocal ensemble, the Mosaic Singers, have opened for legends Aretha Franklin, Al Green, The Temptations, and Harry Belafonte, and have performed with Sweet Honey in the Rock, on tour with Josh Groban and on an acoustic album with rock legends Foreigner. Yet, Mosaic’s impact goes far beyond performing. 95% of Mosaic performers have graduated from high school and gone on to college – far above the percentages for youth nationally from similar backgrounds. Mosaic alumni have gained scholarships to the top college performing arts programs in the nation, including Juilliard, USC, NYU Tisch School of Arts, Berklee College of Music, UNC School of the Arts, Carnegie Mellon, and Oberlin, as well as University of Michigan, Wayne State, Detroit-Mercy, Michigan State, Western Michigan, Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan.
Mosaic alumni have gone on to perform on Broadway and have worked in the television, film, and recording industries, with alums garnering Tony, Emmy and Grammy nominations. In addition, Mosaic alums have become successful lawyers, teachers, social workers, bankers, designers, professors and nonprofit administrators. According to a University of Michigan study, 81% of Mosaic alumni state they experienced more personal growth and transformation at Mosaic than in any other activity they participated in as a teenager.
