In Good Health™ - Lana Farson & Daisy Knudtson, Licensed Acupuncturists

About:

Lana Farson, L.Ac. has worked in the medical field for 30 years and has been teaching Asian herbs since 1999.  She has studied Jing Fang Constitutional Herbal Medicine with Dr. Huang Huang in the US and China for a decade. Lana is the director of In Good Health, an integrative healing clinic in Lafayette, CA and is currently pursuing a clinical doctorate at ACTCM in SF.

Daisy Knudtson, L.Ac. joins us to teach hands on 'Dui Yao' herb pair combos that work well with each constitutional herb.  She has been teaching classes to prepare students for the California Acupuncture Licensing Exam (CALE).  Daisy has also studied Dr. Huang Huang's constitutional herbology and is passionate about making herbal medicines.

Lana and Daisy teach monthly workshops on advanced herbology, constitutional body types, 'Dui Yao' herbal pairs, and botanical medicine making. (with organic plants that are often locally harvested!) They both practice acupuncture and herbology at In Good Health in Lafayette, CA.

Herbs are medicine! These workshops will help you cultivate your relationship to the 18 most important herbs in the herbal pharmacopeia. You will expand your herbal knowledge and deepen your understanding of the dynamic between the 3 crucial elements of transformational healing:

  • the person's constitution
  • the disease pattern
  • the herbal formula

Inspired by Shang Han Lun classical theories, this Trinity System between the person, disease and formula serves as a short-cut for the correct use of herbs. This is a monthly series of afternoon classes that can be taken in any order, as each class is an independent 4-hour weekend workshop.

Over a period of a year and a half, we will cover the healing qualities of 18 different ‘lead herbs’, one per month.  These include:

  1. Cinnamon - 'Guì Zhī'
  2. Aconite - Fù Zǐ'
  3. Dried Ginger - 'Gān Jiāng'
  4. Ephedra - 'Má Huáng'
  5. Astragalus - 'Huáng Qí'
  6. Pinellia - 'Bàn Xìa'
  7. Rhubarb - 'Dà Huáng'
  8. Buplurum - 'Chái Hú'
  9. Coptis - 'Huáng Lián'
  10. Gypsum - 'Shí Gāo'
  11. Angelica - 'Dāng Guī'
  12. Ginseng - 'Rén Shēn'
  13. Licorice - 'Gān Cao'
  14. Gardenia - 'Zhì Zǐ'
  15. Forsythia - 'Lián Qiào'
  16. Poria - 'Fú Líng'
  17. Pueria Kudzu Root - 'Gé Gēn'
  18. Atractylodes 'Bái Zhú'

Each 4 hour afternoon class has three parts:

Part 1 – Constitutional Body Types and their Lead Herb:

Learn to match an individual personality and body type with a 'lead herb' to address specific health needs according to the Trinity System (person - disease - formula). We will do an in-depth investigation of the constitutional body types according to the historical references of ancient texts (‘Shang Han Lun’ and the ‘Jing Gui Yao Lue’).  We will look at the diseases each type is prone to and touch upon representative classical herbal formulas (called 'Jing Fang'), their ingredients and their benefits.

Part 2 – ‘Dui Yao’ Herb Pairs:

To increase your clinical effectiveness, learn how the lead herbs are activated by paired herbs, which synergistically boost the overall capabilities of the formulas. We will go over traditional Asian as well as Western pairs with the lead herb that can be used alone as a mini formula or to modify a formula.

 Part 3 – Medicine Making:

You will create a medicine chest of your own healing remedies and learn how to craft extracts from multiple solutions.

Each class we will make a high-quality product that incorporates the lead herb. You will be able to make, label and take home your preparation. Here are some of the exciting remedies we will create, with organic and locally sourced ingredients:
