Harry S. Truman Good Neighbor Award Foundation
Perpetuating the memory and legacy of President Harry S. Truman
Every year we bring our community together to hear an extraordinary individual speak about American values and why Harry Truman matters. While times have changed the Truman legacy has not. We recognize that President Truman successfully concluded World War II, established institutions like the United Nations and NATO to protect democracy, brought racial equality to the Armed Forces, and was the first president to advocate for a national health insurance program.
The Truman Foundation and its founders have honored the President every year since 1953 when he returned to Independence and lived among his neighbors without Secret Service protection or a presidential pension.
Annually we proudly present the Truman Good Neighbor Award to an individual who represents these Truman values. We honor a distinguished veteran of the United States Armed Forces. We award $40,000 in scholarships to college students pursuing degrees in public service or foreign studies, and host over 50 international students attending local colleges and universities.
