From the time Gina Mertz was 12 years old she was helping her church group feed the homeless in Downtown San Jose, California. A group led by her father, would gather together every Saturday at 4:30am to begin making hot oatmeal, sandwiches and coffee to distribute. She learned at a young age to speak to various men and women who were experiencing extremely difficult times in their lives. Gina continued her work throughout high school and college earning various awards for her extensive community service as a young student.  While studying to become a hairstylist Gina began giving free haircuts to elementary school students in depressed neighborhoods in her hometown of San Jose.

Founder of Project Beauty for All, Gina Mertz and her husband ultimately moved their young family to Carlsbad, Ca. where they began feeding the homeless on the streets of Downtown San Diego. Gina and her family began their own ritual of  waking up at 4:30am on Thanksgiving and Christmas day to make and distribute a hot meal to their homeless brothers and sisters. Before long, this became a common place throughout the year for anyone who wished to join them.

Hygiene and beauty products were added as many friends and colleagues generously gave their gently used items to the cause.  The items included shampoos, conditioner, soaps, lotions, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine products and many  more personal items.

Soon Gina, a professional hairstylist began offering free haircuts to local domestic violence shelters and homeless shelters.  Naturally, the beauty products multiplied making it available to anyone in need of the products. She has since expanded to offering haircuts at these locations for men, women and children with the assistance of caring volunteer hairstylists.
