Lisa Welsh started with 7 students in her dining room 26 years ago. First Position was located in Havertown for 17 years. Ms. Welsh moved to Ardmore 8 years ago and has been at her current location, 19 W. Lancaster Ave. First Floor for 3 years. The new space is lovely, with 4 studios, a proper floor so that dancers can leap and jump without sustaining any injuries.
FPDA started as primarily a modern dance/choreography school. Ballet was included to ensure the proper foundation for all dance styles. 21 years ago First Position was the first studio to offer regularly scheduled hip hop (breakin') and funk styles classes in the tri-state area. The studio offers Ballet/Pointe, Modern/Contemporary, Modern Jazz, Tap, Creative dance, Choreography/Compostion, Jazz, Broadway Jazz and Urban Choreography. Classes are offered for children and adults 7 days a week.
Adults are offered Zumba, Corre Barre, Fly Girl Fit, Heels, Hip Hop, Funk Styles, Sharqui (Bellydance), Modern, Tap, Zumba Toning, Fit to Move (a gentler dance fitness class)and Personal Training. First Position is a true dance/fitness boutique for men and women.
As First Position started in her home, each move to a new location has been an extension of her home. All are welcome and encouraged to throw embarrassment aside and have loads of fun! Yes, First Position is a professional school with loads of students going on to having dance careers, careers in the health industry and supporting the arts financially and in all learning environments. Ms. Welsh’s main goals have always been to create a “heart for dance and the arts”, a safe place where children and adults can just let themselves go, create a non-clique zone where all children and adults are accepted where they stand. FPDA helps clients maintain a healthy outlook on fitness and life, creats a “village/community” in this screen filled and sometimes isolating world by truly caring about others.
