Estero Bay Aquatic Preserve is Florida's first aquatic preserve established in 1966, and is one of 41 aquatic preserves located throughout the state of Florida. These sovereign submerged lands have been "set aside forever as aquatic preserves or sanctuaries for the benefit of future generations" due to "exceptional biological, aesthetic, and scientific value" (Florida Aquatic Preserve Act of 1975, 258.36, F.S.).
