Internationally recognized and critically acclaimed for its eighteen-year history of outstanding artistry, the Children’s Chorus of Washington has reached five continents through domestic and international tours, recordings, and frequent appearances on public radio and television. Our extraordinary music education programs engage and educate vocalists ages 6 to 18 regardless of background, economic status, or prior experience. Emphasizing artistic excellence, responsibility, and personal development, our approach fosters their growth as young musicians and leaders.
CCW’s five auditioned ensemblesperform frequently in self-produced concerts and a variety of public and private engagements in greater Washington, DC. These include a number of performances with leading music organizations at venues such as Strathmore Music Hall, The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Library of Congress, numerous foreign embassies, Union Station, and Washington Nationals Park. Recent engagements include a 10-day tour to China, a concert at the White House for President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 with Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra, Bernstein’s Symphony No. 3 “Kaddish” with John Axelrod and the National Symphony Orchestra, and Mendelssohn’s Elijah with The Washington Chorus and Julian Wachner.
Recognizing the tremendous need for high-quality vocal training, CCW also extends its artistic excellence to the broader DC community through its outreach programs: SING DC for underserved local middle school students, PREP Class for first-time singers, and Teacher Workshops. CCW also powerfully influences the evolution of youth choral repertoire through its history of commissions, such as Wonderful Day Out With Nature by Emmy Award-winning composer Nathan Wang, premiered by CCW during its 10-day China tour in July 2013. In 2012, CCW was recognized by the Washington Area Music Awards (“Wammies”) – Best Choral Group – and Greater Washington Area Choral Excellence Awards (“Ovations”) – Best Educational Outreach.
