Chicago Wilderness Climate Committee

The CW Climate Committee was formed 10 years ago in 2007-2008. Accomplishments include the development of the Climate Action Plan for Nature, the Climate Change Update to the Biodiversity Recovery Plan and numerous on-the-ground efforts to develop and implement climate adaptation strategies for urban nature in the region. The committee, made up of interdisciplinary professionals from 8 organizations work to move forward six long-term regional climate action goals:

i. Identify best practices and programs in Climate Change Education among Chicago Wilderness members and broadly disseminate this information to improve practice

ii. Organizations develop green infrastructure and watershed planning that integrates information on how climate change is expected to impact the region.

iii. Understand the role land conservation and ecosystem restoration play in helping to reduce climate change impacts.

iv. Develop and implement climate-smart adaptation strategies for natural area and green space management.

 v. Coordinate with Government Relations on updates, alerts, and actions that can be taken regarding regional and statewide climate change policy.

vi. Develop plan and structure to coordinate monitoring and reporting efforts aimed at better understanding gradual changes that are occurring, and whether what we’re doing is working to help species and systems adapt.
