Catalyst Network of Communities

Catalyst Network of Communities is a nonprofit social impact organization helping communities to connect, collaborate, and share resources. Outreach includes quarterly Repair & Share Fairs, which feature creative reuse and civil discourse workshops as well as neighborly repair of broken items, a pop-up Free Store, free food, and community nonprofits. In 2015, Catalyst opened the Whittier Free Store, a free, membership-based community boutique which also sources free materials, supplies, equipment, and e-waste for Artisan Work Lab members and programs. A project of Catalyst, the Artisan Work Lab promotes creative reuse and incubates local STEAM businesses by diverting free waste stream materials for use by artists and engineers working in its tool library and learning space. Catalyst's vision is to revitalize the local economy through waste diversion entrepreneurship and restore civility through neighborly communication training.
Catalyst provides news of upcoming local events to over 2,000 residents through the weekly Sustainable Whittier newsletter. Catalyst operates the Long Beach Free Store, Orange County Time Bank, Human Library, and from 2008 to 2013, fiscally sponsored over 40 local nonprofits. Catalyst projects in general, and its Whittier placemaking projects in particular, collaborate at the intersection of skill building, waste diversion, and social justice.
