Caravan Stage Company

The Caravan Stage Company, created in Victoria, BC in 1970, by Paul Kirby and Adriana Kelder, is a professional non-profit theatre company travelling and performing with a diverse cast; creating original experimental theatre & opera, encompassing the themes of civil rights and environmental justice. The Caravan began as the World’s Only Horse Drawn Theatre Company- the one wagon puppet show traveling throughout Vancouver Island grew to become a major theatrical organization with a 25 person company of actors, musicians, artists and technicians touring in six large wagons pulled by a team of Clydesdale horses. Please view a lovely video created by the National Film Board of Canada called, Horse Drawn Magic to glimpse the early days of the Caravan.

In 1990, after 20 years of touring as a contemporary professional theatre, the Caravan took four years, a donated two million dollars and hundreds of volunteers to create the Caravan version of a Thames River Sailing Barge, 30 meter in length, 7.2 meter beam, and a 1.3 meter draft. Built to stage the shows on the entire deck, masts and rigging of the vessel, as well as on the surrounding water and land, the Caravan was created to tour in any waterway and performs in any location, regardless of logistics and services.

Completed in ’94, Amara Zee (the name meaning: Heart of the Sea Goddess), set sail. The Caravan arrives on its beautiful 90ft Tall Ship and transforms the Amara Zee into a fully rigged, technologically inventive, contemporary theatre. The audience gathers on the shore and experiences a 75-minute performance of an original work that enthralls audiences from age 10 to 100; Inspiring people with compelling, imminent and futuristic themes. The shows performed on the ship, with original music, singing, aerial artistry, large scenic elements manipulated by the performers, video- animation projections, lighting and sound effects; Creating a magical visual and auditory feast for audiences of all ages. The Amara Zee is a floating venue, crossing the realities of the present while tethering to the banks of the past and ideas to the far shore of possibilities.

After 8 years touring throughout Europe, as the World’s Only Tall Ship Theatre, from 2005 to 2013, the Caravan has returned to North America, returning to its Home, Victoria, B.C., for the first time in 30 years, to continue sailing in the US and Canadian rivers, lakes, seacoast and waterways. Please view this short video giving a glimpse into the history & what the future looks like as the Caravan Journeys Beyond.
