Autotelic Studios, Sixty Inches From Center, The Perch

Sixty Inches From Center is an online magazine and archive initiative that is going into its 5th year. In our short existence we have worked to archive, document and produce writing about over 600 artists in Chicago with the help of our primary partners WBEZ, Harold Washington Library and the Zhou B. Art Center. And even as a small organization, we have worked our way up to paying the artists, writers and designers we work with—something that is becoming more and more rare in the world of arts journalism.

The Perch is an artist-run project that relies on unconventional fundraising and radical generosity to support the publishing projects of artists throughout the city. Projects taken on by The Perch result in a limited-run and stunning artist book. These books cost nothing for the artists to make—just blood, sweat, time and creativity—and all proceeds from the books go directly to the artists.

Autotelic Studios is an artist community that gives artists access to affordable studio space, workshops, exhibition opportunities and much more. While space continues to be an issue for artists in our city, Autotelic is working on ways to not only fill that demand, but also make it into a thriving, family-like place for artists to build careers.
