Anita Barker

I am a native of Lake Charles, LA and a graduate of McNeese State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology. I am the founder of Because I Care, INC, a nonprofit organization helping families in the Lake Charles Community. In 2013 I founded Girlie Girls Mentoring Program. The “Girlie Girls” mentoring program is a 501c3 Tax Exempt, Non-Profit Organization dedicated to building academic and social excellence in each young lady ages 12-18. Its mission is to empower young ladies to achieve their full potential in becoming an influential member of the community by providing them with education, support, mentoring, leadership and most importantly positive role models. Starting a mentoring program has always been my passion. As long as I can remember I have had a strong desire to make a difference in the lives of children.

My journey to enrich the lives of children began when I became a first grade teacher. I have worked with underprivileged children, participated in a mission trip to Haiti, and was the owner and operator of Smiling Faces Learning Center, a learning center for children ages 3-5 year olds. Over the past 1 ½ years, I have been nominated and honored to receive several community service awards from the following organizations: The Ladies of Top Distinction, the Alpha Phi Alpha Sorority, and Zeta Phi Beta, INC. I was also presented with an award from Mayor Randy Roach for my services and commitment to teens in our community.

Recognition from such distinguished organizations, as well as self-fulfillment and personal gratification, has given me the motivation and support to pursue my PASSION!!!! Giving back to my community is what I love to do; making a difference in the lives of others is my PASSION!!
