Ana Fatima Costa

  • Ana Fatima Costa is a subject matter expert in the field of court reporting; published author; certified coach; and speaker. A former California Certified Shorthand Reporter (CSR) and nationally certified Registered Professional Reporter, she began her career as a freelance stenographic and pro tem court reporter in 1979. Twenty years later, she transitioned into managing the San Francisco office of a national court reporting agency; account executive for two global reporting agencies; litigation secretary for a 30-year partner; and office administrator for a 50-year forensic psychiatrist / expert witness.
  • In 2004, Ana began presenting workshops about court reporting services, technologies, ethics, and challenges at law firms; legal secretary associations; court reporting, paralegal, and law schools; court reporting associations; the Bar Association of San Francisco (BASF); and StenoFest 2019 / 2020.
  • Commencing in 2008, in collaboration with law firm administrators, law professors, litigators, attorney associations, and private organizations, Ana began offering apprenticeships to court reporting students and licensed reporters at mock depositions and trials in the greater San Francisco Bay Area and Silicon Valley. Unlike shadowing a working court reporter, her apprentices are reporters of record and are tasked with speaking up / interrupting as often as necessary to capture the best record they can; marking exhibits; and producing rough drafts or final transcripts. As a result, students dubbed her Mock Woman.
  • She underwent training to become a coach in 2009. Since achieving her certification in 2011, Ana has offered one-on-one and group coaching in interactive workshops and webinars about powerful scientifically-proven processes such as HeartMath's Quick Coherence Technique, whereby clients and participants experience life-changing transformative insights, resulting in peace of mind, greater clarity, and relief from anxiety, worry, fear and other negative emotions.
  • Since 2014, Ana’s articles about a variety of topics related to court reporting have been published in BASF’s print newsletter, Bulletin (and its Legal by the Bay blog page); San Francisco Trial Lawyers Association’s The Trial Lawyer magazine; Legal Secretaries, Inc.’s The Legal Secretary magazine; and California Court Reporters Association’s CCRA Online e-zine. Several articles have been republished in other legal magazines and on National Court Reporters Association’s online journal, TheJCR.com.
  • In 2015, she self-published her ebook, 0-225: Your Guide to Writing Mastery. In February 2020, she published an article on LinkedIn addressing comments made by an MSNBC anchor and former Senator about the Reporter of Debate on the Senate floor during the president's impeachment trial. Thank You, Steno Woman in White Blazer has received over 12,500 views and hundreds of likes, comments, and shares.
  • Through Costa Coaching & Consulting, Ana utilizes the skills and expertise gained through her cumulative 40+-year work, writing, and coaching experience to provide business / career consulting services to court reporting firms, court reporters, students, and other legal professionals and presents workshops/webinars to educate, advocate, and support those whom she serves.
  • In October 2020, Ana was recognized for her contributions to protecting the integrity of the record in a blog posted by South Coast College.
