Aikido, as a traditionally non-competitive Japanese martial art, emphasizes blending with and redirecting of the attacker(s). Movements in aikido center on a fluid flexibility and an ability to maintain a stable and balanced center. The aim of the aikido practitioner is to be in complete control of mind and body, and to maintain a calm yet alert posture.
Aikido of Arlington, founded by Sensei Don Lyon (4th dan), practices in the Iwama tradition. Sensei Lyon studied under Morihiro Saito Sensei in Japan. After the passing of Sensei Lyon, his sempai, Yvonne Thelwell took over the teaching duties at the dojo. Sensei Thelwell has been an uchi-deshi in Iwama, Japan, training under Morihiro Saito Sensei.
