Learn how you can help businesses create value through Zero Waste by attending this training based on the comprehensive USZWBC Zero Waste Facility Certification program for facilities. This training is intended for those interested in pursuing the professional Zero Waste Business Associate (ZWBA) Certification; however, enrollment is open to anyone interested in learning more about the USZWBC Zero Waste Facility Certification and how to better understand the Scorecard Certification System.


Course Overview

This 6-hour course will provide students with an overview of the USZWBC Zero Waste Facility Scorecard Certification System. The course will outline the history of USZWBC, the definition of Zero Waste, what are considered to be Zero Waste policies and programs, and provide a detailed explanation of the Scorecard Certification System, including sample case studies that demonstrate how to achieve credits for each category within the Scorecard. The Training also will provide educational resources and tools to help businesses get started (or complete) their efforts to pursue Zero Waste.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Summarize the history of the USZWBC and the significance of the Zero Waste Facility Scorecard Certification System
  • Describe the key components and history of the definition of Zero Waste
  • Identify the minimum requirements for a business to obtain a Zero Waste Facility Certification from USZWBC
  • Describe how to gather and track baseline information
  • Identify the categories and point rating system of the Scorecard used to certify Zero Waste businesses
  • Discuss the application completion and review process
  • Identify the credits needed from each of the 15 certification rating categories


Who Should Take This Course & Prerequisites

This course is for those who work in or with businesses that plan on implementing a Zero Waste Business plan and/or are applying for the USZWBC Zero Waste Facility Certification for their facility. It is also required for those seeking to obtain the USZWBC ZWBA Certification and/or Zero Waste Business Accredited Professional (ZWB-AP) Certification (more information on ZWB-AP coming soon).


Course Test

There is no test required for completion of this course. However, completion of this course will prepare students for a test to be certified as a Zero Waste Business Associate (ZWBA) and/or Zero Waste Business Accredited Professional (ZWBAP) by the USZWBC. Those individuals pursuing ZWBA Certification will be required to pass a comprehensive exam on the USZWBC Zero Waste Implementers Manual and the information and case studies provided in this course. The Zero Waste Implementers Manual is provided to those who apply for ZWBA Certification. Professional certification program details are available on the ZWBA webpage.
