Event description

Description

Uganda is among the richest countries in Africa in terms of biological diversity, containing over 1,000 species of both birds and butterflies and roughly half of the world’s remaining population of mountain gorillas. Additionally, Uganda is home to such endangered species as the African elephant, rhinoceros, chimpanzee, lion, pangolin, and shoebill stork. Despite its critical importance to the country’s economic growth, however, Uganda’s diverse wildlife has declined significantly over the past 50 years. Among the main contributors to this decline is human-wildlife conflicts, including poaching, crop raiding, and opportunistic killings.

Over the past decade, Uganda has become one of the most important transit hubs in the global illegal wildlife trade. Zoohackathon is one tool we can use to combat the issue of wildlife trafficking and promote conservation. Zoohackathon is a computer coding and technology intensive event that brings together developers, designers, project managers, and subject matter experts to create applications, systems, and tools to help reduce demand for trafficked wildlife products.

This September, the 3rd annual Zoohackathon will take place in San Diego, Madrid, Mumbai, and New Delhi, among other locations. Zoohackathon Uganda will be the first ever event on the African continent! The U.S. Mission Uganda and UWEC hope that you will bring your creativity and technological expertise to help fight wildlife trafficking by participating in Zoohackathon.
