A division of Emmy's Heart
Emmy's Heart was founded in April 2011 while Laura Pita's son, Josh, was undergoing intense treatment for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. As Josh lay in his hospital bed, Laura's mother, whom her grandchildren called Emmy, lay in a hospice bed, losing her battle with metastatic melanoma. Laura was heartbroken watching her son battle the monster that is leukemia and knowing that her mother would be gone within days.
To bring a little bit of happiness into that room, Laura decided to learn how to make a tutu for her niece, Hannah. The day Emmy died, Laura made that fluffy pink tutu. It was a magical experience, bringing joy to Laura and Hannah at a time when they needed it most. That day, Laura decided to make some tutus for the girls on the hematology/oncology floor at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital, where Josh receives treatment.
Upon hearing of Laura's plans, her wonderful friends jumped onboard, and within days of the creation of that tutu, a non-profit organization was born. Sick children and their siblings now have the opportunity to receive a tutu and crown or a superhero cape and mask at absolutely no cost to the families.
Emmy's Heart has chapters forming in many states, and has launched Emmy's Heart By Mail, to reach children who are not in areas serviced by Emmy's Heart chapters. In South Florida, Emmy's Heart has spread, now reaching hospitals in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties.
Emmy's Heart is a true non-profit. No salaries are paid, and all mundane expenses are funded by a dedicated donor.
