How It Works

This Zombie 5K is an apocalyptic 5K obstacle race. You’re not running against the clock, you’re running from brain-hungry, virus-spreading zombies. You can Run/Jog/Walk/Crawl your way to the finish; what you do to avoid the zombies is up to you.

  • Before the race, you will be given a flag belt, just like the game of flag football. These flags represent your health.
  • The zombies want to take your flags and maybe eat your brains.
  • If you lose all your health flags, you die. And the zombies win.
  • Throughout the 5K obstacle race, there will be a series of man-made and natural obstacles for you to complete.  Runners may choose NOT to complete an obstacle, BUT any runner who skips an obstacle will loss a health flag.
  • There will be zombies. Their job is to chase you and eat you -- but mainly go after your health, in the form of your flag belt.  Avoid the zombies to keep your health flags.
  • Use speed, strategy and your intact brains to make it to the FINISH LINE “alive” with at least ONE FLAG INTACT.  If you finish with zero health flags, this means the zombies have successfully transformed you into the “undead”.
  • No worries, even the “undead” get a prize.
  • Runners will be assigned a “wave” to run in once registered.  Waves consist of 25-50 people.  This is to avoid a back-log at obstacles and to prevent a free for all buffet for the Zombies.

***There will be a start line, and a finish line, but what happens in between is up to you.

The Zombies

Our undead chasers will be transformed at our Zombie Transformation Center (ZTC). They’ll do whatever it takes to chase you down and grab your health flags. Our zombies will be fed right before the race, but please remember:

  • Zombies will not physically contact any runner other than in attempt to pull a health flag.
  • Direct physical contact (pulling, grabbing, pushing, striking, etc.) between zombies and runners will not be permitted.
  • Direct and intentional physical contact with any runner is strictly prohibited.  All of those in violation of this rule will be removed.
  • You are to never grab more than one flag from a runner.
  • You are never to grab a flag from a runner if they are waiting to complete an obstacle or while on/in an obstacle.
  • You must obey your zombie group leader at all times.  Trust them, they will lead you to a glorious undead victory.
  • “Walker” zombies are never to run and chase down a runner.
  • “Hunter” zombies must run and chase runners during their shift.  We understand you will need time to rest but we don’t want you standing around your entire shift either.
  • Any visibly intoxicated zombies will not be allowed to participate.
  • All zombies must be 14 years of age or older by race day in order to participate.

Obstacles

There will be a series of man-made and natural obstacles that will be physically challenging, but not impossible. There will be mud, water and maybe some blood. You will need to climb, crawl, duck and dive your way to the finish line.

Oh, and there will be a bunch of flesh-starved undead on your tail.

*** Participants who cannot or choose not to finish an obstacle will lose a health flag

Awards, Medals

  • All runners will receive a medal to signify their survival (or zombie transformation).

Rules & Safety

A few guidelines to make your race day run smoothly:

  • If all of your flags have been taken, you are NOT automatically transformed into a zombie and you may NOT take another runner’s flags, chase other runners, or pick up flags off the ground.  Zombie transformation occurs AFTER you’ve crossed the finish line (the virus needs time to take effect after infection).
  • Direct and intentional physical contact with any runner or zombie is strictly prohibited. You are not to touch, hit, punch, tackle, roundhouse kick, slap, scratch, pinch, spit on, bite, or do anything harmful to the physical health of our zombies or other runners…. no matter how frightened you may be.  Those in violation of this rule will automatically be disqualified and potentially escorted off of the grounds, without refund.
  • If you skip an obstacle (without paying your health flag toll) or tuck your flags into your clothing, you are automatically disqualified.
  • Flags are to be visible to course officials and zombies (not covered by long clothing) and to be worn on the sides of the body.
  • Line up at least 10 minutes before your race wave.  Waves close 10 minutes after runners begin to cross the “Start” line.
  • Visibly intoxicated guests will not be allowed to participate in the race.  Please arrive SOBER.
  • Runners must be 12 years of age or older by race day in order to participate.
  • No weapons or mock weapons will be permitted on the premises.
  • No drugs, outside alcohol, or outside food/beverages are permitted on the property.  Food and beverages will be available for purchase inside the event.
  • No alcoholic beverages are to be consumed by persons under the age of 21.
  • No pets or small children are allowed to race with you. Not even if they’re trained to hunt zombies.
  • Participants and spectators must abide by all instructions given from the race directors, race staff, volunteers and medical personnel.
  • Do not drink and drive.
  • Several photographers and videographers will be stationed along the course. :
  • Bring an official form of identification (license, passport, photo ID, etc.) or a parent/guardian if you are a minor. We will not be able to let you into the event otherwise.

You will be covered in mud, zombie guts, body parts, and other apocalyptic liquids after the race so bring a towel and change of clothing (especially socks and clean shoes to change into).  Costumes are encouraged!
