ZNE Buildings, Distributed Generation, and the Electricity System:

New Types of Relationships

Presented by the Pacific Gas and Electric Company Zero Net Energy Pilot Program

 March 6, 2012

David Brower Center - 2150 Allston Way, Berkeley, CA

Please join Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) and Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) for a presentation and panel discussion about zero net energy (ZNE) buildings, distributed generation, and the electricity grid. The California Public Utilities Commission’s 2008 California Energy Efficiency Strategic Plan calls for all new residential construction to be ZNE by 2020 and all new commercial construction to be ZNE by 2030. As policy and codes continue to guide California’s building industry to greater levels of energy efficiency, we can expect to see increasing numbers of zero net energy buildings connected to the grid.

In the first part of this event, RMI will highlight alternative ways to achieve ZNE goals and the implications of these alternative solutions for the electricity system. What are the implications of ZNE buildings’ “imports” and “exports” of power to the electricity grid? What are the physical, structural, and policy implications of different ZNE approaches? In the second part, RMI will lead a panel of experts, including building owners, architects, technology providers, and policymakers to explore regulatory, utility and industry perspectives on these issues,  followed by a structured audience Q&A
