Description

On November 18, ZINNIA presents their debut album Sensations in Two Dot in collaboration with nine choreographer/dancers. Featuring an opening set by poet/songwriter Jenny Berkel.

A visually-led listening party, each song on the album will be interpreted through the prism of dance. This will be a unique night to not only hear an album that's been three years in the making, but to witness the spectrum of expression in Toronto's choreography community.

ZINNIA is the art pop project of Toronto/Montana Rachael Cardiello. With layered synth and driving beats, ZINNIA brings an explosive range to Cardiello's writing, equal parts intimate and fierce. It weaves the specific stylings of James Burrows, Chris Pruden, Connor Walsh and Mackenzie Longpre (Ian Morris on the album) into a dynamic, technicoloured sound.

Sensations in Two Dot was recorded throughout 2016 with producer David Brandwein in More Sound Recording Studios (Syracuse, NY) and Galaxy Smith Recording Studio (Brooklyn, NY).

Sensations in Two Dot focuses on moments of doubt - creative, societal, and personal - exploring what it means to hold compassion through the multifaceted grey areas of life. Whether in the isolated town of Two Dot, Montana (population 143) or the buzzing streets of Toronto (population 2.6 million), these nine songs probe the complex, unsettling similarities found in the human experience: the hauntings of unrelenting dreams, tensions and tender triumphs in relationships, systems of abuse threaded through communities, and the search for compassion and visibility in everyday interactions. Cardiello pokes fun at the myth of the artistic “sensation” and the popular thirst for sensationalism in news and art.

Since releasing her debut album, Here on a Wire, Canadian singer-songwriter Jenny Berkel has been captivating listeners with her evocative songs and voice. Born in the heart of Ontario's lush forests and fields, Berkel's music has drawn her from rural Ontario to Winnipeg to Montreal and now, finally, back home. This constant shifting finds its rest in her songs — sharp and introspective, they shimmer with memories and poetic observations.

Berkel's writing is at once gentle and hard-hitting. Her rich voice ornaments her poetry with melodies that soar high before spilling back down again. Berkel’s recent sophomore album, Pale Moon Kid, was recorded with producer Daniel Romano and released across Canada in April 2016 (Pheromone Recordings) and across Europe in October 2016 (Popup Records). Reviewers praised the album for its poetry, emotive storytelling, and dream-like ability to mesmerize listeners.

She has toured extensively across Canada and Europe, sharing the stage with artists like Jenn Grant, Daniel Romano, Rachel Sermanni, and the Deep Dark Woods.

“A smouldering sound to behold...acutely poetic.” - Exclaim!
