About this event

Other

Are you a researcher working within the social sciences?

Do you want to try novel ways of disseminating academic research?

Do you believe in life after work?

Join us for a fun and creative session where we'll explore the world of zines as a way of sharing academic research with wider audiences.

No prior experience necessary, just bring your enthusiasm and ideas! Let's get crafty and share research findings through this free hands-on zine workshop.

About this event:

Made possible as part of the ESRC Festival of Social Science 2025, these zine workshops will thematically focus on the age-old question: "Do you believe in life after work?"

Through these workshops, we hope to initiate reflections about identities and the working life, emphasising self-expression and finding joy as an act of resistance in a world where many lives are defined by work, within academia and beyond.

What to expect from the workshops:

Each interactive workshop will last 90 minutes, during which you will learn how to make a zine as a way of disseminating academic research. You will have the opportunity to think about your own research, as well as reflect on your own working life, and how you might use a zine to share your thoughts, findings and reflections.

We will provide all of the materials you'll need to make your zines, but if there is anything in particular you would like to include, please bring it along or send it to the facilitators ahead of the workshop and we can have this printed and ready for you!

In addition to supplying the art and craft materials, we will also be able to provide (optional) guidance on translating research into zines, as well as reflective and creative prompts to help get you started.

Please choose only one of the two zine workshops to attend - you don't need to attend both!

Audience:

This event is open to social science researchers at the University of Edinburgh.

We particularly invite researchers whose work focuses on health and wellbeing, work and mental health, strategies for coping with work-related stressors (e.g., burnout, challenging work environments).

If you are a member of the public and you would like to attend one of our zine workshops, or exhibitions, please get in touch and we can provide information about upcoming events!
