Event Details

Founded in 2007, Zimele is an organization dedicated to confronting the root causes of poverty by removing the barriers to self-sufficiency for women in the impoverished, and often AIDS-stricken, communities of South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province.

“To Stand on One’s Own Two Feet”

By providing accessible programs in economics, education, financial management and job skills, Zimele has empowered over 8,000 women to become small-scale entrepreneurs who not only independently benefit their families, but the community as a whole.

Sophia Peppas + Meghan Kay (also known as #MEGIA on social media)

#megia: MEGhan + sophIA; from the Greek saying “me ygeia” (WITH HEALTH)

From “hello’s” in the office elevator as they ventured to different floors, Sophia and Meghan found themselves connecting at a company party in 2013. Over a few glasses of champagne, they discovered they had a lot in common, including a deep dedication to philanthropic initiatives, building and maintaining healthy lifestyles, and a strong desire to make a positive difference in the world.

Earlier this year, Sophia found herself at the Annual Zimele Gala and was instantly intrigued and inspired to help.  Through a conversation with Meghan, they decided to do something about it…ENTER: the first Zimele + SOULCYCLE Charity Ride!

Both Zimele and SoulCycle are constituents of building a strong community.

So, #MEGIA Community:

“Do your little bit of good where you are.  It’s those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world” – Desmond Tutu

We can’t wait to see you on October 24th

Founded in 2007, our philosophy is rooted in the Zulu word "zimele", which means "to stand on one's own feet". Our programs confront the root causes of poverty by removing the barriers of economic self-sufficiency for women in South Africa's rural communitites.  Over the past two years, especially, we have seen tremendous growth that shows Zimele is impacting the lives of hundreds of Zulu women by offering long-term skills and entrepreneurial support.
