Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Zeta Iota Omega Chapter

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated had its humble beginnings as the vision of nine college students on the campus of Howard University in 1908. Since then, the sorority has flourished into a globally-impactful organization of over 290,000 college-trained members, bound by the bonds of sisterhood and empowered by a commitment to servant-leadership that is both domestic and international in its scope.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. will be celebrating 110 years in 2018.  Still to this day, Alpha Kappa Alpha’s mission is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college women, to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in college life, and to be of “Service to All Mankind".

Zeta Iota Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was chartered on May 1, 1954 in Brunswick, Georgia. Soror A. Catherine Johnson, South Atlantic Regional Director declared the following sorors as charter members: Creola Belton, Minnie Butts, Countess Cox, Mary Jaudon, Charlie M. Kelly Knight, Delores Livingston, Paula McNeely, Edna Rayford, Rosa Waye, and Josephine F. Wilkes.

History seldom, if ever, reveals all. It is impossible toinclude all the love, respect, devotion, gratitude, joy, and challenging frustration that striving for Alpha Kappa Alpha by affiliation with Zeta Iota Omega Chapter has evoked during the past 61 years. However, “through it all” the chapter has survived, grown stronger and continues to be cherished by the members who savor the precious moments of our sisterhood. A closer look at ZIO’s history is chronicled in the spiral bound book A Legacy of Sisterhood and Timeless Service in the Golden Isles.
