Description

Zen Maker Academy After School Program - Mondays 4 to 6 pm from Jan 15 to March 12, 2018 at Zen Maker Lab headquarters in North Vancouver!

This advanced maker tech program is intended for ages 8 to 12 years old that have either taken one of our Zen Maker Camps or Zen Maker Club after school programs or who have a similar experience level. We limit class size to 8 kids to have a high instructor student ratio.

The focus of the Zen Maker Academy program is gaining skills in electronics, engineering, mathematics, 3D design and 3D printing, coding and art, design and usability and some introductory entrepreneurship and applying these skills into both beginning and advanced maker projects.

We have an experienced team of industry instructors leading the program and an instructor to student ratio of no more than one instructor for every eight kids.

Parents will be provided with a regular update on how their kids are progressing through the skills and the participants will develop a digital portfolio showcasing their skills and work. Digital badges will be awarded for each new skill level reached.

General supplies are included in the program (e.g. 3D printing filament, laser cutting materials, basic shop supplies); however, individual project kits are extra and you should purchase our winter Zen Maker Academy Project Kit Package when you sign up for this program.

These project kits consist of electronics, laser cut and 3D printed materials, fasteners, etc. We purchase them in bulk to keep the prices substantially below the cost of similar project kits at local retailers or online.

We use these project kits extensively in our Zen Maker Academy program and work through them as a group. We cover a lot of sophisticated materials and it's not possible if every child is doing a different project. Once kids develop a good foundation of maker skills and they have completed the program projects, they can start to work on their own custom projects within their skills capabilities in addition to the projects that the group does together.

The planned projects are still being determined but we do ask for the students feedback to determine project topics that are of interest to them. The specific project may be subject to change although we will do our best to stick to the general theme and project topic.

This Monday Zen Maker Academy will be led by Cyri Jones and Fardin Barekat of Zen Maker Lab.

An online support forum also comes with the Zen Maker Academy program. Kids under 13 need their parents permission to be part of this online platform (it is fully private).

This program is intended for kids that are serious about learning while having fun making cool projects with other kids. If you are new to Zen Maker Lab, it's best to contact us in advance of enrolling in our Zen Maker Lab Academy program to ensure there is a good fit. For kids with no experience in maker tech, our Zen Maker Club is likely a better option to get started. We offer programs for Zen Maker Club on Fridays noon to 1:30 pm and after school at schools across the North Shore (currently Braemar in North Vancouver on Thursdays and Caulfield Elementary in West Vancouver on Fridays).
