Event description

Zen Maker Academy (Online)

Since 2013, we have been delivering our science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM) academy program and stimulating the next generation of innovators and leaders. It's inspiring to see many of the children and youth that joined with us when they were young now applying for and enrolled in leading engineering and design schools or starting entrepreneurial ventures and social enterprises.

We have been delivering high quality STEM/STEAM programs to more than 10,000 students at some of the top private and public schools in Canada for many years including Mulgrave, Brockton, Cousteau, Caulfeild, Gleneagles, Cedardale, Maple Grove and dozens more. With our Zen Maker Academy Online program we are able to open up our program to anyone, anywhere!

The focus of the Zen Maker Academy Online program is gaining skills in electronics, engineering, mathematics, 3D design and 3D printing, coding, art, industrial design, usability and some introductory entrepreneurship and applying these skills into both beginning and advanced maker projects. We also integrate physical literacy (play) and measurement/data analytics to ensure children and youth stay active and healthy and not overly staring at screens. We have an experienced team of teachers and industry instructors including engineers, digital media specialists, leading the program that help inspire the kids and in the turn the amazing projects the kids imagine and create inspire our instructors.

How does it work?

We start the week on Monday with an interactive livestream and introduce a project and provide students with a challenge. We have multiple livesteam sessions so it can fit your child's and your family's schedule and can be done by children and youth currently in a regular daytime school or for students that are home schooled or away from school temporarily. We run multiple sessions to take into account different time zones as well (with a focus currently on Pacific Time and Eastern Standard Time).

From Tuesday to Thursday, students work on their projects for the week and our instructors support them via our online learning platform (Moodle) and collaboration tool (Zoom) to further encourage them and to answer questions. We continue having daily interactive livestreams from Tuesday to Friday to showcase the cool designs the participants have been making and to answer frequently asked questions and add additional challenges for students that want to go further.

Students submit their final designs by Friday at 3 pm Pacific Time, 6 pm Eastern Time. From Friday evening to Sunday evening we produce the cool designs, objects and products your child makes (laser cut parts and 3D printed objects) in our 3D printing and laser cutting "farms" at our Zen Maker Lab locations and we mail them out on Monday for arrival usually by the end of the following week (some shipping times may vary).

This isn't just a cookie cutter project kit subscription service. With the Zen Maker Academy Online, your child is the creator and fabricator and we provide the guidance and the manufacturing so that your child can see their ideas get turned into reality!

The feedback we hear from kids enrolled in our programs and parents is "it's magic!" and "best program ever!". We were one of the first child focused maker labs in North America and we have learned after hundreds of programs what works well and keeps the kids engaged and actively learning, future proofing for the future, while having fun.

Maker Lab in a Box Bundles

For each grade range, we have a unique "maker lab in a box" bundle that provides your child with equipment, tools and supplies to set up their own local maker lab right at home!
