Description

Since November 9th, 2016, we have seen a resurgence of Americans protesting. As any New Yorker who works close to Trump Tower, protests in our city are almost daily. From the Women's March to Unite the Right Rallies to NFL players kneeling during the national anthem, people are organizing and demonstrating to make their voices heard and attempt to affect change. But is there still power in protesting? Does it actually deliver the change being sought? Is it just a form of catharsis?

In our second Zeitgeist Media Club meeting, we will discuss the history American protests, their effectiveness and how that can inspire and inform our opinions of how, in the digital age, groups should be organizing and protesting.

Material we will be using to guide the discussion:

1. An Incomplete History of American Protest (Whitney Museum Exhibit)

“Through the lens of the Whitney’s collection, An Incomplete History of Protest looks at how artists from the 1940s to the present have confronted the political and social issues of their day. Whether making art as a form of activism, criticism, instruction, or inspiration, the featured artists see their work as essential to challenging established thought and creating a more equitable culture. Many have sought immediate change, such as ending the war in Vietnam or combating the AIDS crisis. Others have engaged with protest more indirectly, with the long term in mind, hoping to create new ways of imagining society and citizenship.”

2. "Is there any point to protesting?" (The New Yorker Article)

Nathan Heller pens an essay on the efficacy of modern protesting and questions whether we are just doing it wrong.

3. Brush up on the history of historical protests and social movements. Suggestions:
