You've Got Your Ancestry DNA Results,

What Next??

I've tested. So how do I use the results?

This class in the CGS classroom is for those who have already submitted a DNA sample to Ancestry and want to know the next steps and strategies to make family connections from the results.  Completing this class or the similar one for FamilyTree or 23andMe DNA tests is a prerequisite to join the ongoing DNA study group.

The class will cover:

-Using the tools provided, e.g. chromosome browsers, triangulation, phasing, chromosome maps, and other important concepts for successful genetic genealogy.

-Using the other very helpful sites, e.g. gedmatch.comdnagedcom.com, etc.

-Avoiding errors in using DNA to add to your tree. What can and cannot be determined by DNA.

NOTE: Knowledge of Excel or a spreadsheet program is important and time will not allow these skills to be covered in class.

Laptops are welcome for working on and sharing your results during the day.

Pam Miller, a native of Dallas, Texas,  attended Stanford where she earned a B.A. in Linguistics and an M.A. in Spanish. She was employed as an educator in the Bay Area for twenty-eight years, teaching Spanish and computer science. Pam has been using the various DNA tests in her search since the early 2000s. She has been a member of CGS since 2005 and also teaches Introduction to Genealogy and classes about land records.
