Description

Please join us Tuesday, September 26 at 10:00 am for a special community forum.

What’s it like to grow up in the far reaches of the Bay Area, in a city like Antioch or Vallejo – or an unincorporated area like Bay Point?

As the tech boom transforms the region, more and more families are moving to the outer suburbs. Young people are finding themselves uprooted and starting over in new places, joining the ranks of others who have spent their whole lives in the suburbs and exurbs – all of them carving out a future for themselves on the Bay Area’s margins. Now that outlier regions are growing younger and more diverse, could the edge of youth culture be shifting to the suburbs?

Over the past year, thanks to a group of youth development agencies, New America Media has worked with more than a dozen young people from the East Contra Costa cities of Antioch, Pittsburg, Bay Point, Brentwood and Oakley, and the Solano County cities of Fairfield, Vacaville, and Vallejo, to produce a special issue of The Richmond Pulse dedicated to amplifying youth voices from the Bay Area’s outer suburbs.

At the forum, we'll hear from the young people who participated in the project, as well as some of the youth development agencies that serve them. Ideas are percolating among these young adults, and we need to know them and be part of their conversations.
