Description

Youth Summit is a FREE one-day event for youth aged 15 to 18 that focuses on youth mental health and substance use, achieving the following goals:

  1. Increase knowledge and build awareness about mental health and substance use and available resources and services

  2. Decrease stigma towards individuals experiencing mental health/ substance use challenges

  3. Generate ideas on how to promote mental health and wellness in your school community

Morning Keynote:

Let’s start the conversation. Knowledge is power. This key note address will empower you to make choices that are right for you. Drug identification, trends and purity, understand reasons for use and addiction and so much more from a presenter that has worked directly with youth and adults who struggle with substance use issues on the downtown Eastside of Vancouver.


Breakout Session: Choose two to attend (one for the morning and one for the afternoon)

Selena Hallett – Let’s talk about Sex

Participants: 25

Topics covered will be Gender identity; who are you, Your Body; how it works, Protecting yourself; spreading the word and not the disease, Sex and the internet; lets talk about porn.

Walk on the wild side - Learn how to be safe in our beautiful northwest forests.

Being in nature is healing, revitalizing and sometimes scary. This workshop will give you the confidence to go on that hike.

Qmunity Gender and Sexuality 101

Participants:25

Examination of gender stereotypes, identity, gendered insults and bullying. Learn the myths and definitions of the LGBTQ?2S. A must for all supporters and allies of LGBTQ/2S.

Cst. Danny CHAN & Laura Olsson – Social Media, Sexting and Safety 101

Participants: 25

Social media plays a big role in our lives today. Learn the safe guards to protect yourself and your friends when it comes to giving sexual consent, sexting, and social media safety.

Gary Anaka: Your Brain on Gadgets

Participants: 25

As your brain continues to learn new things, it also continues to grow. Learn about how our brains work and what the impact of us being connected to our phones and tablets has on it.


Afternoon Keynote:


Sandra Boulianne - Self – Care 101

Let’s look at how we can take care of ourselves mentally. Learn to nurture your mental health through your actions, experiences and lifestyle choices. How we cope with life stressors can have a positive impact on our mental health.
