Youth STEAM Innovation Competition


2017 Official Contest Rules


1.Eligibility Requirements


1.1 Each competing team consists of 2 to 3 student members. To be eligible to compete, the student must be enrolled for the current school year in grades 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, or 12 at a middle school or high school, or a equivalent school (for home schooling or other special education program) in southern California area, and be born on or after October 1, 1999 and on or before October 1, 2006.


1.2 No student may compete on more than one team.


2. Competition Topics


2-1. The topic for this year competition will be “Living on Mars”, which including two missions:


2-1-1. Design a Mars living community, and


2-1-2. Build a vehicle for Mars transportation.


2-2. Mission 1 will use 3D printing software to design a full functional living complex;


2-3. Mission 2 require use a simple robotics kids (GoPiGo3, LegoEV3, etc.) to build a moving vehicle and complete certain projects.


3. Mission 1 – 3D Printing Design Contest (2 hours total)


3-1. 3D Printing design contest including three required projects, one optional project, and one mission report. They are coded as: P1, P2, P3, P4, and PR and briefed as following:


3-2. P1 (Basic Skill): use existing model / library in the software (cube, sphere, etc.) to build a house-like combination; Score: 15 points max.


3-3. P2 (Advanced Skill): create your own model(s) and build up to three architectures (beyond the simple cube and ball shapes); Score: 15 points max.


3-4. P3 (Comprehensive Skill): create basic models and use them to build a full functional community with main life supporting facility (explain their functions / applications); Score: 30 points max.


3-5. P4 (Exploration and Challenge): open project – create your own block and built whatever you think they will use on Mars; Score: 20 points max.


3-6. PR (Mission Report): the mission report will be scored from following categories (total 40 points max.):


3-6-1. Why and how to make such design (Creativity); 15 points max.


3-6-2. Most challenges during the design and how to solve them (Scientific / Technical Skill)

10 points max.


3-6-3. How to use each team member’s talent to complete the mission (Teamwork).

10 points max.


3.6-4. The expression is clear and easy to follow, spelling is correct (Marketing).

5 points max.


4. Mission 2 – Robotics Contest (Max. 10 min. total)


4-1. Robotics contest including three required projects and one optional project: R1, R2, R3, and R4.


4-2. R1: take minimum time to complete a closed rectangle track; Time: not exceed 2 min.; Score: 20 points max.


4-3. R2: take minimum time to complete a closed rectangle track with one circle at the first turn, two circles at the second turn, and three circles at the third turn; Time: not exceed 2 min.; Score: 20 points max.


4-4. R3: take minimum time to complete a route – there will be three obstacles on the route. The robot should be able to bypass the obstacles; Time: not excess 3 min.; Score: 30 points max.


4-5. R4: open project: show any special functions that your robot’s special function(s) to help people living on Mars; Time: not excess 3 min.; Score: 20 points max.


4-6. RR (Mission Planning): the mission planning will be scored from following categories (total 30 points max.):


4-6-1. Why and how to build such robot (Creativity); 10 points max.


4-6-2. Most challenges during the robot design and how to overcome them (Scientific /

Technical Skill) 10 points max.


4-6-3. How to use each team member’s talent to build the robot (Teamwork).

10 points max.


5. Scoring


5-1. All missions will be scored separately. Each mission may earn 100 points maximum on the

three required projects (including action and report), plus maximum 20 points bonus on the open project.


5-2. The three 3D printing design action projects (P1, P2, and P3) total may earn 60 points. See Sec.3-2, 3-3, and 3-4 for the details.


5-3. The three robotics competition action projects (R1, R2, and R3) total may earn 70 points. See Sec. 4-2, 4-3, and 4-4 for the details.


5-4. The mission quality (based on the mission report and judge interview) will earn 40 points maximum on the mission 1. The mission quality will include creativity (up to 15 points), scientific / technical skill (up to 10 points), and teamwork status (up to 10 points), and marking (expression) (up to 5 points).


5-5. The mission quality (based on judge’s interview with the team members) will earn 30 points maximum on the mission 2. The mission quality will include creativity (up to 10 points), scientific / technical skill (up to 10 points), and teamwork status (up to 10 points).


5-4. Both missions are set one open project (P4 and R4) to encourage all team members open their mind and create a brand new topic / field. Each of them may earn 20 points maximum as the bonus points.


5-5. Penalty points have been set to keep the competition fair. So if the robot take a shortcut to reach the goal line, the team will receive -10 points. Also, if the robot take too long time to complete, the team will get -5 points penalty.


6. Miscellaneous Rules


6-1. No one in the audience may communicate with participants during the competition; communication will result in ejection from the competition room. The officials may clear the room of coaches, alternates, and observers if communication is suspected. If someone in the audience shouts out any instruction words, and the team with which the shouter is associated can be determined, that team will forfeit the match.
