Youth Mental Health First Aid teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to mental health issues and substance abuse disorders.

About this Event

Course will take place over 1 day. 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. with a working lunch. Doors open at 8:00 a.m. Breakfast and working lunch will be served!

Target Audience: School Personnel (Teachers, Counselors, Child Study Team Members, Support Staff, Other School Personnel)

*This is a free course provided by a Grant provided by the New Jersey Health Institute. This is typically at $170.00 course

*Upon successful completion, the participant will have a 3 year certification in Mental Health First Aid for Youth

Program Objectives:

1. Increase knowledge of mental health and substance use disorder issues in youth and adolescents.

2. Enhance sensitivity to the prevalence of mental health disorders in adolescent development, resiliency, and the spectrum of interventions.

3. Raise confidence to intervene and assist individuals experiencing a mental health issue by using a Mental Health First Aid Action Plan.

The course will teach you how to apply the ALGEE action plan:

• Assess for risk of suicide or harm

• Listen non-judgmentally

• Give reassurance and information

• Encourage appropriate professional help

• Encourage self-help and other support strategies

Facts:

*SUICIDE is the 3rd leading cause of death in young people between the AGES OF 10 AND 24.

*44,965 Americans die by SUICIDE EVERY YEAR.

*For every suicide, 25 people ATTEMPT SUICIDE.

Learner Outcomes:

1. After successfully completing the course, the learner will identify two potential risk factors and warning signs of a variety of mental health challenges common among adolescents, including anxiety, depression, psychosis, eating disorders, ADHD, and substance use disorder.

2. Successful completion of the course is defined as in-person attendance for the learning session and a completed course evaluation.
