Youth Mental Health First Aid teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance abuse disorders

About this Event

*8 hours Nursing CEU's will be received upon completion of the course. Must complete full day of training.

Program Objectives:

1. Increase knowledge of mental health and substance use disorder issues in youth and adolescents.

2. Enhance sensitivity to the prevalence of mental disorders in adolescent developement, resiliency, and the spectrum of interventions.

3. Raise confidence to intervene and assist individuals experiencing a mental health issue by using a Mental Health First Aid Action Plan.

The course will teach you how to apply the ALGEE action plan:

• Assess for risk of suicide or harm

• Listen non-judgmentally

• Give reassurance and information

• Encourage appropriate professional help

• Encourage self-help and other support strategies

Facts:

  • SUICIDE is the 3rd leading cause of death in young people between the AGES OF 10 AND 24.
  • 44,965 Americans die by SUICIDE EVERY YEAR.
  • For every suicide, 25 people ATTEMPT SUICIDE.

Learner Outcome:

After successfully completing the course, the learner will identify two potential risk factors and warning signs of a variety of mental health challenges common among adolescents, including anxiety, depression, psychosis, eating disorders, ADHD, and substance use disorder.

Successful completion of the course is defined as in-person attendance for 95% of the didactic learning session and a completed course evaluation.
