About this event

Reducing food loss and waste is serious work that can also be a lot of fun!

The symposium will feature 3 youth-friendly workshops that will inspire youth, families, and friends to reduce food waste at home, at school, and in their community!

Want to earn the chance to win food rescue kid swag bags worth $100?

Come join us and make this a family or organization event! The more youths you bring, the more chances you get to win a prize! (*)

Choose your food waste adventure by picking one of the following workshops to attend during the event. All workshops will be happening at the same time.

(1) Urban (and Kitchen!) Agriculture – We will get a virtual tour of an urban farm to see what it takes to grow food, even in small spaces. And we’ll learn how to turn your own kitchen into your own urban farm by re-growing food scraps. With a little love and patience, we can re-grow our food to enjoy a second or third time!

(2) Become a Food Explorer – Do you live with a picky eater – adult or kid? This workshop will show you how to rediscover the sensory delight in food while creating meals that are delicious and colorful… not just good for you.

(3) Preserving Surplus Food – Preserving surplus fruits and vegetables does not have to be a chore! Come and try out our kid-friendly recipes that are not only delicious but use up those leftover ingredients in no time. Want some recipes to keep cool for the summer? We have some just for you in this workshop!

Pro tip: You will also gain access to our Educator’s Guide to Food Waste Prevention if you attend our event! A perfect companion guide for any educator looking for informative, interactive, out-of-the-box activities to encourage youth to become food rescue heroes!

COVID-19 Emergency Relief Efforts

This workshop is free but please consider making a donation.

Now more than ever, an overwhelming amount of Canadians are experiencing hunger. Your donation will help ensure that everyone can access the food they need to nourish themselves and their families. In this time of crisis, let’s leave no one behind.

Every dollar provides enough food for two healthy meals for Canadians in need.

Thank you to our presenting sponsor, Scotiabank

Organizer Second Harvest

Organizer of Youth Food Waste Prevention Symposium

Second Harvest is the largest food rescue organization in Canada and a global thought leader on food recovery. Working across the supply chain – from farm to retail – we capture surplus food before it ends up in landfills and has a negative environmental impact. Since 1985, Second Harvest has redirected more than 177 million pounds of food and prevented over 267 million pounds of greenhouse gas equivalents from entering our atmosphere. Supported by hundreds of corporations, foundations, and the community at large, Second Harvest rescues and delivers enough food to provide over 62,000 meals every day, benefiting a growing network of over 2,300 social service organizations across Canada.

In addition to our food rescue and delivery program, Second Harvest is committed to supporting our community through training, certification and on going best practice workshops.
