This training is supported by the work of the Whole Child Task Force initiative in support of a Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child model.

8:30-9:00 Registration and a light breakfast

9:00-12:00 – “Development and Trauma”

Purpose/Goal: Present the latest research findings on the intersection of brain development, behavioral health, and trauma.

Objectives - Participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the role of comfort, control and connection in development and behavior
  2. Explain the significance of the ACE Study
  3. Explain the Importance of the “CIA” (Calm, Identification of Feelings & Asking for Help) Pyramid
  4. Explain the importance of the 5 C Pyramid & the Reward Circuit
  5. Demonstrate and explain how 4 x 4 breathing works


12-1:00: Lunch will be included at no charge


1:00-4:00– “Teens and Compassion”

Objectives - Participants will be able to name:

  1. Major differences between the teen and adult brain
  2. The unique effects of distress on the adolescent brain
  3. The three new drives of adolescence
  4. Two effective ways to help tweens and teens cope


Karen Williams, MSSW, is an independent education consultant who is known for her ability to explain the latest neuroscience in ways that are easy to understand and apply to real life. Her workshops and training sessions focus on: 1) child and adolescent brain development and behavior; 2) the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study; 3) the impact of distress, anxiety, and trauma on brain development and behavior; 4) the developmental approach to Juvenile Justice and preventing the school-to-prison pipeline; 5) stress management practices for adults and youth; and 6) the trauma-informed/sensitive and compassionate schools movements. Ms. Williams is the recipient of the 2012 Prism Award from Mental Health America of Greater Dallas, a former member of the Dallas Commission for Children and Youth (DCCY), a consultant/trainer for the American Institutes of Research (AIR), a guest educator for the Trans4m Center, and a frequent conference speaker.
