About this event

  • 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Mobile eTicket
  • You listen to your child, but they get frustrated and shout: 'You never hear what I say"
  • Your teenager ignores you and is becoming, defiant and more disrespectful every day
  • Your close bond has gone and you are longing to rebuild the relationship you once had with your child

Although we as parents believe we are listening to our children, we are often not giving our kids what they need to feel heard! Instead, we are expressing our opinions and views, which means we are talking, and not being present!

Come along and watch (or participate!) in a reflective listening exercise with your teenager, a partner, or another member of the audience!

  • Learn the benefit of reflective listening.
  • Increase your understanding of what your child is saying.
  • Help your child clarify their thoughts, feelings, emotions, and behaviours.
  • Reassure your child that someone is willing to attend to their point of view and wants to help them express what is going on for them.

This powerful exercise will help remove reactive emotions and feelings from your heated discussions at home and allow both you and your child to focus on the facts that present!

A life-changing exercise, Sue uses this tool regularly in her therapy work, to change the dynamics of arguments through the teenage years, help parents gain more respect, allow children to build trust, and improve happiness levels in the home.

A teenage and family therapist, Sue O'Callaghan is a twice-published author, and mother to 4 adult kids.

Having worked with thousands of teenagers over 35 years. She knows what works!

Not only has she lived in boarding schools in the UK, Singapore, and Australia as a resident housemistress, but she has also worked in maximum security prisons, where she learned some of the toughest survival skills that permanently changed lives.

Recognised for her trauma-informed school education programmes, parenting classes, and one-on-one work with children, teenagers, and twenties kids, Sue brings a level of knowledge, wisdom, and compassion to the audience that not only inspires but also is infectious.

Come ready with questions, and problems, as Sue always loves an open discussion at the end, where real-life situations can be discussed!

This talk is the last in our FOUR-PART Mental Health Parenting Talk Series, equipping parents with powerful tools.

Don't miss out on the rest in the series, continuing past Mental Health Month.
