London, United Kingdom
In the last decade, global and local financial setbacks and crises we witnessed were a wake-up call to many as to the crucial role of capital in capitalistic society. At the same time, the role of finance in overcoming environmental, social and development challenges became evident. At the COP21 in Paris, it became clear that funding the transition to a sustainable society is one of the main critical components that still need to be lined up. For example, according to the World Resources Institute, developing countries alone will need USD 531bln of additional investments in clean energy technologies each year in order to limit global temperature rise to 2° C above pre-industrial levels.
The question to all of us is: What is our opportunity and responsibility as banking customers, savers, pension fund holders / beneficiary owners, professionals working in finance-related companies and corporate departments? It is our money that is widely invested through banks, insurances, pension funds and other financial intermediaries. The investment decisions define to a critical degree how our future economy is built up and the Planet will look like. Is this money contributing to the problems or to the solution? What can be the impact of sustainable finance in solving major environmental and social challenges?
