Being present

You'll learn…

The Universal Principals of comedy
What is funny about you in particular
How to better engage an audience
How to get past performance anxiety
How to choose material
How to target your most essential stories
How to move from 'comedy adjacent' to funny

Beth's principles have helped writers, performers and other humans get funnier through quelling overwhelm, breaking through creative blocks, leaping over plateaus.

"You But Funnier" is perfect for anyone working on stand-up, storytelling, spoken word, TED talks, content creation or memoir. Musicians, teachers and directors have all flocked to this class to hone their story sense, timing and connection to the most essential creative selves.

Infinite Writing refers to the infinite loops of creative energy built from looping between writing and performing. Working material out its feet, whether or not you are planning to perform it breathes life into your writing. And then bearing down on the writing, helps the material gain depth.

WHAT EXACTLY WILL HAPPEN IN THE WORKSHOP?

It’s almost impossibly simple.
And impossibly effective.

This is an intensive, designed to facilitate a breakthrough for each participant.

1. Beth opens the workshop with inspiration and instruction on techniques for using comedy in writing, performing, speaking all geared to helping you become you, but funnier.

2. Beth answers questions about technique, work flow, career strategies and specific writing and performing challenges.

3. Each participant steps up to have one on one time with Beth. 5 minutes of material and then 5 minutes of targeted feedback, and conversation.

We'll break for a delicious lunch from Friends and Family.
You can choose vegan or non. We'll stretch our legs then...

4. A lightening round of fast non-prepared material to get the juices flowing and help participants see where they may have undiscovered comedy.

5. A second round of one on one time, allowing participants to utilize the techniques discussed in the first half. Participants are encouraged to work on different material in this round than the first.

6. We'll close the Workshop with intention setting and final

Time at the mic (no mic is required if you’d rather simply sit and talk) can be a stand up set, reading a new piece, working from bullet points or working with Beth on a question and answer format.

Beth’s notes cover what worked and why, what didn’t work so well and why not. Why something was or wasn’t funny. And very specific suggestions for how to make it funnier, and how to be funnier as you, always.

Beth is the creator, host and executive producer of the legendary UnCabaret which revolutionized comedy. She has shepherded it through more than 25 years of weekly live shows, CD’s, TV, and touring and recently produced the 25th Anniversary show which Variety called ‘A Triumph!”. UnCabaret has been called a ‘comedy be in’ by Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair said there is “Nothing cooler,’ and the LA Times called Beth the ‘godmother of alternative comedy’. UnCabaret has been featured in and on Comedy Central, audible.com, Comedy World Radio, CNN's History of Comedy, NPR and so much more. Read Beth's LA Weekly cover story "A Place in The Un".

Concurrent with UnCabaret Beth has worked as a host, actor, writer, stand up and creativity coach.

Her hosting work extends to radio, where she hosted both the “Beth Lapides Experience” and “Radio UnCabaret” for Comedy World Radio ad her podcast is "Life and Beth". For television she hosted "UnCabaret" for Comedy Central and "The Couch", as a pilot, for MTV. She's been helping creatives grow their careers for almost 16 years. Her particular areas of expertise are teasing the most personal funny out of anyone. Helping comedians find their unique comedic perspective. Helping writers find the golden vein of their stories, and figuring out what to do with them in the marketplace. She is especially adept at helping creatives surf transitional periods in their creative lives.

Her first inclination that she might be good at teaching and coaching came when her friend Jessica Bendinger was at a crossroads and shared a handful of projects she night pursue. "The cheerleading story," Beth said. Fade out fade in.... Bring It On.

Since then Beth's taught both independently and at institutions such as UCLA Extension, Second City Chicago, Skirball Cultural Center, Writer's Bootcamp, mediabistro, The Humber School of Comedy, Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health and The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. Her students have gone on to succeed in stand up careers, TV writing, screenwriting, publishing books, one person shows, teaching, web series, acting careers, producing and better lives.

Beth also works one-on-one with private clients. This work is very effective for longer projects, clients outside of Los Angeles, clients who require privacy and creatives with high powered day jobs needing more flexibility. FAQs

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

This is a workshop for adults. No ID is required, unless it makes you feel good to get carded.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

The usual in Los Angeles. Drive, bike, bus, Lyft, Uber, walk! There is free parking around the neighborhood, but it's a little tight so leave 15 minutes or so. If you arrive late, it happens, #traffic, #life no one will be available to take a call, just come in when you are ready. But try to be there a little early so we can get going on time. Take the beautiful elevator to the second floor. This was a building Liberace had a place in so you know it's going to be a pretty swanky elevator and it is! Or take the stairs and get some excercise!

What can I bring into the event?

You can and should bring all your enthusiasm, questions, concerns, brilliance, ambition, insecurity, talent. Bring somethng to take notes on. And two pieces, 5 minutes or under, you are working on to do for the class. Those things can be fully written and then read, bullet pointed, in your head, or a big bag of scraps of paper. If you aren't sure how to choose, bring a few and Beth will help you. If you don't have anything no probelm, Beth will work with you one on one asking you questions and leading you to material.

You are free to bring your own luch but one will be provided. We'll also have coffee and other beverages during lunch. Feel free to bring water to hydrate with all day.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?

Feel free to contact us with questions, or to set up a free phone assessment, or to schedule private consults. Text Beth at 213-706-3630. Or email beth@uncabaret.com.
