Description

Yoga Therapy for Pain Management
The Viniyoga methodology for working with people who deal with chronic pain utilizes a variety of strategies that address the whole person. Movement and breathing are the most well-known yoga strategies for chronic pain, yet it is often the inner dimensions of yoga that are fundamental to optimal life functioning. We will pick three categories of chronic pain to explore the benefits of Yoga Therapy: structural pain, fibromyalgia, and headaches.

This special workshop is designed for health professionals, yoga teachers, and others who would like to understand Viniyoga's therapeutic interventions for chronic pain and learn Viniyoga strategies for assessing individuals with chronic pain and intervening in beneficial ways.

12-8-17, Friday
Friday, 10 am-12:30 pm, Understanding Pain and Objective Strategies for Working with Pain
In this session, we will focus on the physiology of pain and the role of yoga therapy in addressing it. In addition, we will explore methods for working with pain including muscular activation, breath regulation, sound, chanting, and relaxation.

Friday, 2:30-5:00 pm, Understanding Pain and Subjective Strategies for Working with Pain
In this session we will focus on subjective strategies for managing pain including methods for building focus, developing a capacity for self-reflection and the profound tools of meditation, mantra japa and visualization.

12-9-17, Saturday
Saturday, 10 am-12:30 pm, Structural Pain Management – Focus on Low Back & Hips
In December 2005, the Annals of Internal Medicine reported that yoga is an effective treatment for back pain. These results were found in a study conducted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the yoga protocol in that study was designed by Gary Kraftsow using the gentle approach of Viniyoga. In this session, we will focus on the specific therapeutic sequences for the lower back and hips.

Saturday, 2:30-5:00 pm, Pain Management for Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by wide-spread chronic structural pain with multiple trigger points, fatigue, and anxiety. Practice will be designed to relieve this wide-spread pain, increase energy, and calm the nervous system.

12-10-17, Sunday
Sunday, 10 am-12:30 pm, Structural Pain Management – Focus on Neck and Shoulders
There are many types and causes of chronic pain, and the practices used to help individuals vary according to these differences. In this session, we will focus on the specific therapeutic sequences for neck and shoulders.

Sunday, 2:30-5:00 pm, Pain Management for Headaches
There are approximately 45 million Americans complaining of headaches each year. Gary will discuss different types of headaches and methods for working with them. Practices will include specialized adapted movements, breathing techniques and guided meditation.
