Yoga Philosophy Workshop - History of Yoga
Sun, April 9, 2017, 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM AEST
Join us as we unpack and explore the timeline of yoga, reaching back as far as the Sramanas (“those who sat amongst the trees”) who were believed to be the first yogis in the Harappan Civilisation in 5000-2500BC. Ancient artefacts were discovered from this time that depict figures in yoga poses and postures, some believed to resemble Lord Shiva ( Our First Yogi) and Parvati (His First Student/Disciple) performing various asanas and practicing meditation. It was at this time that yoga emerged in some form or another, and through the ages it progressed, shifted and changed in various ways to become what it is today.
We will delve deep into yoga’s rich and diverse history, exploring the ancient texts of the Vedas, the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita and the Yoga Sutras, revealing and following the thread between all these periods and their relevance to us today.
This one day lecture/workshop would be perfect for yoga teachers but can be embraced by yoga practitioners who are simply wanting to deepen their understanding of their practice, history and philosophy and access the wisdom of the ages. We will also chant a couple of truly transformative mantras from some of these potent periods.
We hope you can join us for this illuminating afternoon!
