Event description

Description

Suffering from back pain? Yoga therapeutics can help! In this workshop, you will learn poses that are specific to releasing tension in the upper, middle, and lower back. Appropriate for all levels of yoga ability and open to all.

We will explore select poses geared towards strengthening and releasing back muscles. We will also review poses that could potentially be damaging to the back, so that special attention can be given to proper alignment. This will be done through both individual and partner work, as well as working with yoga props (provided). We can help support the spine through yoga -- while being mindful that our asana practice does not contribute to back pain. Workshop-style sessions are set up to give us spacious time to delve into poses, ask questions, and get an integrated experience without rushing.

Chia-Ti is a certified yoga instructor, Thai bodyworker, and enthusiastic beginner tango dancer. Before her life in wellness, Chia-Ti toured the country performing spoken word and teaching poetry in Brooklyn. Many years ago, she unexpectedly found herself guided by an inner calling to India and it was the most amazing gift she could receive from the universe. She studied yoga therapy at the Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana in Bangalore, and got her first certification in Februrary 2003. She has studied a range of yoga styles, like Anusara, Hatha, and Vinyasa, and blends these traditions with pilates and qigong in her theme-based classes. In New York City, Chia-Ti teaches gentle chair yoga to elders, some of whom are wheelchair-bound due to stroke; open level classes to adults that are donation-based, free, or sliding scale; and mindfulness practices to youth in detention centers and suspension high schools. Her teaching is informed through trauma sensitive and resiliency theories. Chia-Ti believes whole-heartedly that yoga should be available and accessible to all folks, no matter their age, ability, size, income, gender, race, or location.
