Event description

Description

As part of Links Hall's 40th anniversary season, Yin He Dance Company presents its inaugural evening of classical and contemporary dance, Vice and Virtue. Through the voices and experiences of women, Vice and Virtue explores a world dominated by perception with a series of works whose inspiration ranges from today's social media dominated era to 17th century Chinese literature. Program includes classic Chinese work, 桃夭, as well as original choreography by Artistic Director Angela Tam.

Company Info: Yin He Dance Company (YHDC) bridges the past and present. Rooted in movement traditions found in Chinese culture, YHDC seeks to present works that feed the mind, body, and spirit of present day peoples while honoring those who came before. Founded in 2015 and under the direction of Angela Tam, YHDC hopes to preserve traditions while also pushing boundaries to propel Chinese dance into the future.

Artist Info: Angela Tam is the founding Artistic Director of Yin He Dance Company. She is a dancer, choreographer, and teaching artist. A Chicago native, Angela began dancing as a child under Qiu Yue Jin, a renowned dancer and performer who was among the first generation of dancers trained during the revival of Chinese dance in 20th century China. Since then, Angela has studied Chinese dance under Yiliang Wang (Shanghai Song and Dance Ensemble), Margaret Yuen (Red Silk Dancers), and Guixuan Zhuang (Dance China NY). She has performed as a featured soloist at Choose Chicago's citywide Chinese New Year Kick Off events at Chicago Cultural Center presented by Chinese Fine Arts Society. In 2016, she was awarded the Ethnic & Folk Arts Master Apprentice Grant from Illinois Arts Council. She received a Gold Award at the 2016 Overseas Taoli Cup Midwestern Regional Competition for her solo performance of "Yin Yang." She received her BA in East Asian Studies from New York University. Since founding Yin He Dance Company, Angela has been devoted to sharing her love of Chinese dance as a performer and educator. She also choreographs folkloric and contemporary work.

Sponsored/Funded by: This project is partially supported by a CityArts Grant from the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs & Special Events.
