Getting into bed with an IP Licensor

Marvel, DC, Disney, Transformers - what do all of these big names have in common? ASSETS! No, we’re not talking about money here… it’s their IP licenses that we love. These large companies are pumping out new material all the time... tv shows, movies, toys, but not games! Indie game studios are brought on to develop, create, and transform these licenses into new games.

As a game developer, what does it mean to work with IP license holders and integrate their assets into your game? What hidden missteps lay within this challenge? Can you own the users? Can you own the revenue? Who is responsible for the marketing?

What about open licenses? What if I’m making a game around an intellectual property that no one holds, but is a widely recognized IP (such as Texas Hold’em Poker)?

To answer these questions… we have created the perfect event for you!

For this month’s San Francisco Game Developer’s Workshop, we invited Gerard Cunningham, CEO of Koolbit, Margaret Wallace, CEO of Playmatics, and Brian Backus, Principal at Backus Media will share with you their experience and insights how developers and licensors are collaborating to design games that are true to the franchise and resolve questions that you may have in the issue! Join us on Tuesday, September 10th at 6PM! Register today!

YetiZen Innovation Lab

YetiZen is a key cornerstone of the game industry. It has two paws.

The first is the YetiZen Innovation Lab, a 20,000 square feet games innovation space in the heart of San Francisco that provides 150+ events for game developers including our popular San Francisco Game Developer’s Workshop series. We saw 10,000 attendees last year making YetiZen the largest regularly meeting game developer hub globally.

Second we run the YetiZen accelerator program, the only games focused accelerator program in existence. The accelerator has 150+ mentors, 50 angels and 9 VCs (including Tim Chang from Mayfield Fund and Phil Sanderson from IDG Ventures) who are the leaders of the game space. YetiZen has had 30 companies graduate from the accelerator program including Frenzoo makers of the world's first 3D fashion game for women (featured by Kindle and reaching top 20 iOS games) and YesGnome, a SIM and strategy game developer and the makers of the official Madagascar game.
