  • IN FROM TEL AVIV & NEW YORK -- YEMEN BLUES DUO TO PLAY FOUR SHOWS AT CROONERS DEC 26 & 27

WORLD-FUSION SUPERSTARS PART OF CROONERS BOLD HOLIDAY LINE-UP

Yemen Blues Duo -- formed out of COVID necessity in Zurich early 2020 by Yemen Blues frontman Ravid Kahalani (vocals & gimbri), and Shanir Blumenkranz (bass and oud) -- plays four shows Crooners Supper Club, marking their Crooners debut.

The Tel Aviv-based Kahalani, one of contemporary music’s boldest avatars of multi-culturalism, was born into a Jewish Yemeni musical family with a long line of renowned singers. In his music he celebrates the inter-dependence of cultures – mixing Hebrew and Arab melodies -- while also reveling in the blending of ancient and contemporary styles, from Middle Eastern/Latin/funk, jazz and soul.

Shanir Ezra Blumenkranz was born in Brooklyn to Egyptian and Polish parents. He has been featured on over 30 releases on John Zorn’s Tzadik Records label and has played and toured with (among others) Pharaoh’s Daughter, Marty Ehrlich (Israel), Miho Hatori (Brazil) and on a US tour with Yo-Yo Ma’s “Silk Road Project,” playing oud and bass. In Israel, where attended the Rimon School of Music, he formed the Lemon Juice Quartet, an avant-garde jazz quartet that performs internationally.

Ravid Kahalani – Singer / Composer / Producer & Performer. Born in 1978 to a Jewish Yemeni family that is known for its singing talent and includes a long line of renowned singers. Ravid has become an important star in the Israeli music scene over the past several years. Via a series of detours, Ravid was drawn to music first and foremost through his love for African-American soul and blues, roots music and traditional religious songs. Ravid’s diverse singing talent instilled an enthusiasm for the music of the Sahara and North Africa. This caught the attention of renowned Israeli singer Idan Raichel and led to Ravid becoming the lead singer in Raichel’s World Music project & had over 400 shows all over the world in the last 5 years. Nowadays, Ravid is a rare guest in Idan Raichel’s shows as YEMEN BLUES’ calendar is completely filled up. Ravid has performed in over 150 shows with Yemen Blues in the last 3 years while still performing with Idan Raichel and many more solo shows on his own. Along the way Ravid has taken part in many projects. He also has studied Opera (singing as a counter tenor), Orthodox Serbian church singing, composing & writing songs in many musical generas. Ravid has composed for and worked with top musicians around the world including Balkan Beat Box, Matisyahu, Oxmo Puccino, Idan Raichel and has been featured on many releases and Radio shows.

Shanir Ezra Blumenkranz studied at the Manhattan School of Music and holds a B.A. in Performance from Berklee School of Music in Boston, MA. Additionally, he attended Rimon School of Music in Israel where he founded the Lemon Juice Quartet in 1993, an avant-garde jazz quartet that has extensively toured the U.S. and performs regularly around New York City.

Blumenkranz is a founding member of Satlah, a Jewish-inspired trio mixing rhythms from the Middle East with avant-garde sensibilities. Satlah has recorded numerous albums for Tzadik Records, including Rashanim, Shasha Argov, and Masada, a compilation of music composed by John Zorn for the ten-year anniversary of his band. Blumenkranz has performed and recorded on acoustic and electric bass, and oud with the Jazz Mandolin Project, Pharaoh’s Daughter, George Garzone, Satoshi Takeshi, Hank Roberts, Daniel Carter, Roy Campbell, Sabir Mateen, Charles Burnham, Brandon Ross, Will Connell, Ravish Momin, Jim Puglesie, Jamie Saft, Mark Dresser, Frank Lacy Anthony Coleman, Ned Rothenburg, Marty Erlich, Trevor Dunn, Susie Ibarra, Roberto Rodriguez, Ikue Mori, and John Zorn.
